– About Me –

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2390″ img_size=”565 x 565″ onclick=”zoom” css_animation=”left-to-right”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]You’re on my about page? Wow, that’s awesome! Thank you. I’ll try not to keep you.

I have started this website by saying “I’m a photographer”, well, strictly speaking, between you and me – that’s not quite accurate. Because I’m not a photographer. I’m obsessed.
I’m obsessed by light. I’m obsessed by colour, angle, hardness (or softness) of light. I’m obsessed by how it falls, how moving light form one place to another can change the shape, and therefore the interpretation, of any object. I’m so obsessed that my wife gets grumpy at me when I pause a movie just to admire the light. “Shut up about the light and watch the bloody movie, Gerry!”. Yeah, that’s me. I always thought I love the visual image. I do, I can attest to that. But actually, nope, it was deeper than that, it was light. It was about Claude Monet’s work that inspired me as a child. Not because of its beauty, but because of the way he worked with light. It was in the odd way Salvador Dali painted “Gala far away behind the sun” – how he made light and shadow into the form of a woman. I can carry on here, but… I’m obsessed with light. This is my career: I’m a studio guy, a lighting guru.

I’m obsessed with teaching. I’ve been punished for my disdain of authority by being one. I know a thing or two about my own obsession with light, and so, I teach. There are few things as wonderful as seeing the light go on (horrible pun intended) when I give lighting workshops. I love to see how beginners and amateurs come into my workshops not knowing which end of a camera to look through, and walk out competent and confident. It is amazingly fulfilling. I teach lighting, photography, and Photoshop. Please contact me for information about my next workshop, or if you would like to organise one.

I’m obsessed with beauty. Maybe because I’m not an oil painting myself, this fat, bald, short guy with bad teeth seeks beauty because he cannot really find it in himself. The most beautiful thing is the human form, which I celebrate in all its forms – especially the unusual forms. I try to find beauty in unusual places. Sadly, those types of beauty are usually camera-shy. This saddens me.

Personally, I’m obsessed with my wife, Andrea. We’ve been together 11 years now. We live in a comfortable but not too big three bedroom house in the north-western suburbs of the big smoke of Johannesburg, South Africa. We have two dogs, named Laszlo and Laika. They’re a rare breed called Hungarian Puli, look it up. Quite interesting, and very cool. My wife and I are both obsessed with cricket. We love to cook, which does not help the ever-expanding waistline. We have a grumpy petite baby hippo named Felicity. Don’t ask.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
